Behind The Scenes

The Rhythm and Souls Fest was not another concert. It was a memorable, fast-paced experience that showed me what it’s like to work in the media industry. As a UTA Radio DJ, I had the chance to cover the event as both a music fan and a professional entering the world of entertainment reporting.

From the moment we arrived, I knew this would be no ordinary assignment. My colleague Trent and I received media access, which meant we had to juggle several responsibilities: capturing footage, coordinating interviews, and staying ready at a moment’s notice. The environment buzzed with energy and movement, pushing us to stay alert and flexible.

One of the highlights of the night was interviewing legendary hip-hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh. Standing just a few feet away from such an iconic figure was surreal. Despite my nerves this was my first time interviewing a celebrity. He made the experience feel comfortable. His advice to young creatives stood out: practice your craft, stay true to yourself, and create work that lasts. Watching him perform live, including his signature beatboxing, reminded me why he is a key figure in hip-hop culture.

I also interviewed the iconic R&B trio SWV. The transition between interviews was hectic, with hardly any downtime, but it showed me how fast things can move in the industry. Talking with them felt like a full-circle moment for me as a fan. Their message emphasized focus, resilience, and understanding the business side of music insights that extend beyond the stage.

Beyond the interviews, the performances were electrifying. From our spot near the stage, we saw how these artists connect with their audience. The crowd’s energy was incredible and witnessing multiple generations come together to celebrate music highlighted the lasting influence of both hip-hop and R&B. SWV’s harmonies were even more moving live, showcasing their impact on generations of artists.

What made this experience even more special was the reality behind the scenes. Timing was tight, schedules changed frequently, and communication had to be quick and clear. There were moments of stress, including a wave of nerves before interviews, but those experiences became part of my growth. This event showed me the importance of preparation, teamwork, and staying confident under pressure.

As students entering the media industry, chances like this are priceless. The Rhythm and Soul Fest taught me that success in this field needs more than just passion it requires adaptability, initiative, and the ability to perform under pressure. From sending emails for interviews to executing coverage in real time, every step mattered.

Overall, the experience was a perfect ten. It was a night of learning, growth, and unforgettable memories. Covering The Rhythm and Soul Fest was not about reporting on an event it was about stepping into the shoes of a media professional and rising to the occasion.
